In 1886 Col. Vaughan Thompson commissioned Thomas Colcutt, one of the major exponents of the Arts and Crafts Movement in architecture, to carry out additions at Westhay which included a new porch. This was constructed in terracotta and was a most unusual feature. The design was exhibited at the Royal Academy in that year.
