A History of Hammersmith Bridge

A History of Hammersmith Bridge

The first edition of this history of Hammersmith Bridge was written in 1987. It still stands as a comprehensive review of this iconic river crossing. Hailstone explores the trials and tribulations that beset first William Tierney Clark and then Joseph Bazalgette as they wrestled with the engineering challenges presented by this wonder of the age.

This timely new edition, a joint project with the Fulham and Hammersmith Historical Society, preserves Hailstone’s original narrative while seeking to cast the current challenges in an historical context – ferry services, temporary bridges and possible tolls are nothing new. The book benefits from a stunning panoramic cover and a wealth of new illustrations, many in colour, while an epilogue recounts developments over the intervening three decades culminating in the bridge’s current predicament.
