This paper tells the story of the Bootmakers’ Almshouses. Located north of Mortlake Station, this development was built in the mid-19th century to house “aged and decayed” bootmakers, their widows and orphans and was colloquially referred to as “The College of All Soles”. Drawing on the minutes of the Footwear Benevolent Society, the paper relates the history of a practical example of early Victorian philanthropy for workers in need. Today these bijou residences are privately-owned and have been renamed Rosemary Cottages
